Michael J. Fox Will Voice A Robotic Dog

Michael J. Fox Will Voice A Robotic Dog

In animated adventure A.R.C.H.I.E.

Michael-J-Fox-ARCHIE

Michael J. Fox has some experience with canine matters on screen; after all, he was the voice of Chance, the cocky bulldog in the Homeward Bound films. And then there was his hairy time in the first Teen Wolf. So he seems like the perfect choice to play a robotic rover in animated adventure A.R.C.H.I.E.

Robin Dunne has cooked this one up, writing and making his directorial debut with a movie about a scientist named Brooke Benton (Katharine Isabelle) who created the techno-hound to help people under the auspices of a military programme. He can talk, run amazingly fast and boasts super strength and x-ray vision. In your face, Benji!

But when the programme is closed down, Brooke helps her creation escape in the hopes that he can find a family to live with. He ends up in the small town of Deanewood, where he forms a bond with the lonely Isabel Sullivan (Sarah Desjardins), who has just moved to live with her uncle Paul (Dunne), town mayor and local burger restaurant owner. They’ll both need help from the powered pooch, as she could use a friend and he’s looking to retain his political position. Double Dutch International will be selling rights to the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival, and there’s no word on when the movie will arrive.

Sam Neill Plays For Tommy's Honour

Sam Neill Plays For Tommy's Honour

Starring in Jason Connery's golf biopic

Clearly having inherited his father's love of golf, Jason Connery has just begun principal photography Tommy's Honour, based on Kevin Cook's acclaimed history of golfing pioneer Old Tom Morris and his son Tommy. Peter Mullen and Jack Lowden are playing, respectively, the older and younger Morris men, with Ophelia Lovibond as Tommy's wife Meg. And latest to join the cast is Sam Neill, as R&A captain Alexander Boothby.

Pamela Marin co-wrote the screenplay with Cook. The story revolves around St Andrews legend Old Tom's relationship with Tommy, who showed a remarkable golfing talent of his own and matched his father's achievement with four Open wins (the first at the age of 17), managing the feat in consecutive championships. Although both father and son profited from their share of rich gamblers' side bets on their matches, times were still hard and life for the Morris family in mid-Victorian Scotland brought its share of drama and tragedy to their story.

"I'm very excited to bring the story to the screen," says Connery. "It is a story that is truly close to my heart as I grew up with my father on a golf course, and I have a home an hour from St. Andrews. This is an extraordinary and intimate tale of love and family at the beginning of the great game of golf. I am thrilled to have an actor of [Neill's] calibre join our great cast. He brings another element to the film with his experience and captivating on-screen persona. Production is off to a rousing start!"

Risen Trailer Emerges Online

Risen Trailer Emerges Online

Joseph Fiennes' Roman crosses path with a mystery

The life, death and resurrection of Jesus has been the subject of many movies and TV series through the years, but Risen is looking to explore a different angle on part that particular story. Check out the first trailer for the film, which features Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felton and Peter Firth.

Kevin Reynolds’ film, which he co-wrote with Paul Aiello, follows Roman military tribune Clavius (Fiennes), a firm believer in his empire’s power and someone tasked with removing resistance. But when it appears that Jesus of Nazareth has – in accordance with his followers’ beliefs – risen from the dead after his crucifixion, Pontius Pilate (Firth) assigns Clavius and his aide Lucius (Felton) the task of figuring out the mystery, to avoid an uprising in Jerusalem.

It’s certainly a sideways look at the story, and one that hasn’t often been tackled to such a degree. It could prove controversial, but the filmmakers look to be making real efforts to show both sides. With Cliff Curtis, Maria Botto, Mark Killeen, Antonio Gil and Stephen Hagan also in the cast, Risen will be in our cinemas next March.

First Trailer For Eddie Redmayne's The Danish Girl

First Trailer For Eddie Redmayne's The Danish Girl

Reuniting with Tom Hooper for the historic transgender drama

Tom Hooper’s next film, The Danish Girl, looks like being a significant player at next year’s Oscars. With Academy Award-winning Eddie Redmayne in the lead as transgender pioneer Einar Wegener and Alicia Vikander in close support as his wife Gerda, it’s long on acting pedigree and hardly short on the tough but uplifting themes Oscar delights in. Take a look at first trailer below.

The film, a story of identity, art and sensation in mid-20th century Europe, has been simmering away for a number of years. Nicole Kidman, Tomas Alfredson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron have all been linked and unlinked at various stages but it’s with Les Misérables collaborators Hooper and Redmayne on deck that it’s making its way to the screen.

Redmayne's Wegener is a Danish-born artist who was one of the first known people to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Born male, she underwent a series of experimental surgeries in Germany, beginning in 1930 and changed her name to Lili Elbe. Vikander's Gerda is shown as an initially enthusiastic partner to her husband, even capturing him in women’s clothing on canvas, who came to feel marginalised by his dalliances with Ben Whishaw’s suitor Henrik.

If Redmayne’s transformation is the obvious story, Lucinda Coxon’s (The Crimson Petal And The White) script looks like offering plenty of nuance to this true-life story of transformation and identity.

Amber Heard, Sebastian Koch and Matthias Schoenaerts round out The Danish Girl’s cast. It lands in UK cinemas on January 1.
