Given Disney's hunger for – and success with – turning fairy tales the company has previously animated into live-action stories, it was only a matter of time before the Mouse House's conversion fairy dust alighted on a stalwart part of many yarns that usually doesn’t get much attention. Yes, Prince Charming is the latest character set for re-invention.
The studio has bought an untitled script by Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son writer Matt Fogel which is being kept quiet for now, but is, according to The Hollywood Reporter, along similar re-interpretative lines to the likes of Maleficent and, to a lesser extent, this year’s Cinderella. Which admittedly did do more with his royal blandness than has been attempted much before. Though the new film will have to go some to top the imaginative lengths of the sleazy, manipulative Charming found in Bill Willingham’s Fables graphic novels.
With producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman and Tripp Vinson aboard (the first two are also on Bill Condon’s version of Beauty And The Beast), this one will start its journey through the thorny forest of development, with the director and cast search likely to kick off soon so the supply of potential fairy tale re-imaginations can continue unabated.
