Jerry Weintraub 1937-2015

Jerry Weintraub 1937-2015

Legendary producer was 77

Jerry-Weintraub-obit

Ocean’s Eleven producer Jerry Weintraub, a man almost as well known for his sense of showmanship in life as the movies he made, has died at the age of 77.

Born in Brooklyn in 1937, Weintraub was raised in the Bronx and obsessed with cinema. In his teenage years, he’d sneaked in to the local Lowes Paradise Theater so often that the manager offered him a job as an usher. He ditched high school at 17 for the Air Force and then used the G.I. Bill to fund his education at Sanford Meisner’s Neighbourhood Playhouse. He took a somewhat traditional route into show business, working as a page at NBC and in the mailroom at the William Morris agency. But his restless spirit meant he sought out more, and became a personal manager to various clients on the club circuit and worked briefly for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1959.

His first big taste of success came in 1960 after founding Management III with Bernie Brillstein and Marty Kummer. After badgering Elvis Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker to let him promote one of the musician’s tours, the huge returns saw clients flock to him for promotional services, including Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton and the Beach Boys.

After a fortuitous meeting with Robert Altman during a John Denver performance, Weintraub got into film, working on Nashville. His film career stretched across genres and styles of films, including Diner, the four original Karate Kid films (and the 2010 remake), The Firm, Vegas Vacation, Soldier, the Ocean’s Eleven films, Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind and Oh, God! On TV, he worked on innumerable live shows and special events, including the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics broadcast. More recently, he produced HBO comedy The Brink and was part of the team for the new Westworld series on the channel.

He parlayed his success into charitable events, raising money for student scholarships and, along with his wife Jane Morgan, participating in the Variety Club Foundation and various medical charities. “In the coming days there will be tributes, about our friend Jerry Weintraub,” George Clooney, a frequent collaborator, said in a statement. “We’ll laugh at his great stories, and applaud his accomplishments. And in the years to come the stories and accomplishments will get better with age, just as Jerry would have wanted it. But not today. Today our friend died. To his family and friends, Amal and I send our love. And to those who didn’t know him we send our deepest sympathy. You would have loved him.”

Assassin's Creed Adds Michael Kenneth Williams

Assassin's Creed Adds Michael Kenneth Williams

Omar comin' to the game adaptation

Michael-Kenneth-Williams-Assassins-Creed

Michael Kenneth Williams is a man in demand. Just hours ago, word broke that he was joining Andy Garcia and Matt Walsh in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters. Now comes the news that he’s also closing a deal to play one of the key supporting roles in Assassin’s Creed

Justin Kurzel is directing the game adaptation, which reunites him with his Macbeth stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. Fassbender has the lead role of an everyman kidnapped by a mysterious, high-tech organisation and forced to relive the memories of his assassin ancestors as he locates powerful artefacts.

How Cotillard, Ariane Labed and now Williams fit in to the plot are still being kept locked in a treasure chest, though Variety has discovered that Williams’ character will have a major stake in the story and is likely to continue if the first film births a franchise, promoting him to co-star. Read into that what you will.

He’ll shoot Ghostbusters, which is already in production, first and then move on to Assassin’s Creed. He’ll also be seen in Captive, which has yet to confirm a UK date and spoof melodrama TV series The Spoils Before Dying, a sequel to The Spoils Of Babylon.

Andy Garcia Joins Paul Feig's Ghostbusters

Andy Garcia Joins Paul Feig's Ghostbusters

Alongside Matt Walsh and Michael K. Williams

Andy-Garcia-Ghostbusters

As the cameras continue to roll on Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, the Spy director is adding more cast members to his ensemble. He now has Andy Garcia, Matt Walsh and Michael Kenneth Williams on board

As you’ll likely already know, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon are already busy in the main roles, playing four women who must stop New York being swamped by spooks and ghouls.

Garcia is playing the mayor of the city the man who, if he holds true to Ghostbusters tradition, won’t be the biggest fan of the characters, at least not until he really needs their help. Walsh, currently best known for playing the nervy Mike McLintock on Veep, will be a character known as Rourke, though we don’t know what he’ll be up to. Could he be the usual busybody who gets in the Ghostbusters’ way? If so, he’ll be joining a proud lineage that includes actors William Atherton and Kurt Fuller. As for Williams, he’s also a mystery, but The Wrap reports he’s set to play someone named Hawkins. They join Chris Hemsworth, who is playing an assistant to McCarthy and co.

And in keeping with another hallmark of the original film, a real-life news anchor, this time NY1’s Pat Kiernan, will crop up in the plot to report on the spectral goings on and the women who are trying to stay in business busting ghosts.

Working from a script he co-wrote with Katie Dippold, Feig is now shooting in Boston, taking aim at a July 2016 release.
