Zack Snyder Defends Man Of Steel

Zack Snyder Defends Man Of Steel

'The thesis of Superman is consequences...'

man-of-steel

The San Diego Comic-Con kicks off later this week, during which we can expect plenty from DC / Warner Bros. on Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. But in the meantime director Zack Snyder is already weighing in on the audience reaction to the previous Man Of Steel, suggesting in the process where the sequel might be headed.

[Spoilers follow, for the three of you that haven't seen Man Of Steel] There were, we'd argue, two controversies at the end of Man Of Steel: the snapping of Zod's neck, and the 9/11 levels of destruction that Zod and Superman wreaked around Metropolis. It's the latter that Snyder is concerned with here. The problem most people had with the devastation was that the nascent Superman seemed unconcerned by the collateral damage of his super-pummelling. Not so, says the director:

"I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences. There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one’s getting hurt. That’s not us. What is that message? That’s it’s okay that there’s this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone?"

The implication there, as has been much predicted, is that Batman V Superman will explicitly count the Metropolis dead, who provide the impetus for the whole "versus" deal.

"One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings,” says Ben Affleck, who you may have heard plays Snyder's Batman. “And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event."

As we said, expect way more Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice action later in the week.

Teaser Trailer For Netflix's Lemony Snicket Series

Teaser Trailer For Netflix's Lemony Snicket Series

Something unfortunate is coming...

There's a pleasing level of total mystery surrounding Netflix's impending series based on Lemony Snicket's 13-book Series Of Unfortunate Events. We still don't know who's working on it either behind or in front of the camera, but it seems that one Eleanora Poe is responsible for the marketing campaign, and she's just released a teaser trailer. Warning: contains extreme spider violence.

Ms. Poe, readers of the gloomy tomes may remember, is the sister of Arthur Poe, the banker charged with managing the Quagmire fortune and the Baudelaire orphans' estate. So it's fitting that she should be stepping in to oversee their affairs in this regard.

The mournful ditty playing over the promo is a version of the Dresden Dolls' Missed Me, but note that the record on the gramophone is by Stephin Merritt's Snicket-influenced The Gothic Archies. There are plenty of visual gags and references like that included to ensnare the Snicket faithful, including a shadowy glimpse of the dastardly Count Olaf himself.

“On the search for fantastic material that appeals to both parents and kids, the first stop for generations of readers is A Series Of Unfortunate Events,” Netflix’s Cindy Holland said last year. “The world created by Lemony Snicket is unique, darkly funny, and relatable. We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members.”

Snicket – the nom de plum character for author Daniel Handler – isn’t so sure. “I can’t believe it,” he said, from an undisclosed location. “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.”

The series - which still doesn't even have a name - will cast its leaden pall on the streaming platform sometime in 2016.

Jurassic World Spends Fourth Weekend Atop The US Box Office

Jurassic World Spends Fourth Weekend Atop The US Box Office

Terminator Genisys makes do with third

Jurassic–world–Main

The battle at the US box office was even closer this weekend, which saw America eating itself into a stupor, setting off all the fireworks and going to the movies for the Fourth of July holiday. But while the two big champs of the charts – Jurassic World and Inside Out – sparred for first place, the new arrivals performed more like a wet roman candle with a dodgy fuse. Yet despite Inside Out claiming the top spot for the five days, Jurassic World stomped the weekend, earning $43.8 million, according to studio estimates.

Jurassic World has now roared past $550 million in the States, with its domestic total now standing at $558.1 million and pushing it further past $1.3 billion globally. Inside Out was no slouch, however, outperforming the dinosaurs on daily takes during the week, and earning $30.1 million for the weekend, with $246 million as its domestic total with several big worldwide markets still set to open. And there’s always a chance the final figures could see Team Pixar triumphant for the weekend.

As for the newcomers, the news was less promising. Hurt by bad reviews, Terminator Genisys managed a disappointing $28.7 million weekend combined with an early weekday launch for $44.1 million, an opening which questions the future of the franchise somewhat. Still, we’d expect the need to make more movies before James Cameron retrieves the rights in 2019 will be enough encouragement. Magic Mike XXL, on the other hand, had the benefit of a respected first film and mixed-to-positive reviews. But even decent word of mouth couldn’t get it past $11.6 million for the weekend and $26.6 million total. Still, Mike has an advantage Genisys does not: a much smaller budget, meaning the film is already approaching profitability. In fifth place, we find Ted 2 with $11 million, taking another hit after that low opening and only now scraping towards $60 million.

Sixth was family pooch adventure Max, which didn’t get as much of a boost from the patriotic weekend as Warner Bros. might have liked, but still made $6.6 million down in sixth. Spy slipped two places to seventh with $5.5 million, with the Paul Feig/Melissa McCarthy action comedy now sitting at $97.8 million and more than $200 million worldwide.

San Andreas fell to eighth with $3 million, with Sundance hit Me And Earl And The Dying Girl expanding its platform release, entering the top 10 at ninth and earning $1.3 million for $4.4 million so far. Fellow indie Dope fell a few places to 10th, taking in $1 million.

To see a dinosaur bite down on Arnold Schwarzenegger in the full chart listings, head to Box Office Mojo.

Hello Kitty Movie Planned

Hello Kitty Movie Planned

Cat's all, folks

Hello-Kitty-Movie

Every famous character eventually gets their shot at a film, and given that pretenders such as Angry Birds are already squawking their way towards our screens, it’s perhaps only right that something with even more history should join the avalanche. Prepare thyself, then, for news that a Hello Kitty movie is in the works

It’s all part of a plan by “Japanese character and lifestyle business” – no sugar-coating there – Sanrio, which has the rights to the Kitty character and is looking to develop a movie for launch in 2019 around the world, which sort of makes it sound like Skynet’s big plan, if the malignant machine was aiming to swamp us with cute, stylised creatures, not destroy us with nuclear weapons.

Hello Kitty, which was originally initially known as “the white kitten with no name”, was created by Yuko Shimizu and introduced in Japan in 1975 before spreading globally in 1976. Oh, and she’s not technically a cat – she’s supposed to be a little girl named Kitty White, who was born in the London suburbs. She’s five apples high and weighs three apples, but you knew that already, right?

What she’ll be doing in the film is anyone’s guess, as no details have been released. But Sanrio – which makes billions from the rights – is looking to spend between $162-$242 million on this project.
