Timothy Spall In Talks To Play Ian Paisley

Timothy Spall In Talks To Play Ian Paisley

He could be the late Democratic Unionist Party leader

Timothy-Spall-Ian-Paisley

Having won major acclaim (and an acting award at Cannes) for his performance in Mr. Turner, Timothy Spall has his eye on another job playing a real person. He’s in talks to play the late Sir Ian Paisley in The Journey.

While it sounds mostly like an excuse for our Chris to roll out his Paisley voice for the Podcast, Nick Hamm’s film is actually chronicling the story of how two seemingly implacable enemies – Paisley, the stalwart, vocal leader of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness – who had to find common ground and make history.

Hamm is writing the script with Colin Bateman and aims to kick off filming in Northern Ireland and Scotland this September, once he’s found someone to play McGuinness. It’ll represent another meaty role for Spall, playing a man who managed to forge a lasting friendship with someone he once bitterly opposed, to the point where McGuinness was visibly moved at Paisley’s funeral last year. The actor has several films on the way, including Alice In Wonderland sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass (out May 27 next year), plus Away and Special One.

Paul Thomas Anderson Tackling Pinocchio Script

Paul Thomas Anderson Tackling Pinocchio Script

For Robert Downey Jr.'s planned film of the fairy tale

Paul-Thomas-Anderson-Pinocchio-RDJ

Here’s a filmmaking trio we’re not sure anyone could have predicted, even if they’d stapled Nostradamus’ skull to Paul the football result-predicting octopus’ memorial: Paul Thomas Anderson. Robert Downey Jr. Pinocchio. Yet they are indeed being brought together as Anderson is now aboard to re-write and potentially direct the latest take on the puppet story.

Robert Downey Jr. and producing partner/wife Susan Downey have been trying to get this one to screens for years now, setting up the project with the idea that the once and future Tony Stark will play Geppetto, the woodcarver whose puppet boy is granted the gift of life. Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller, Kick-Ass co-writer Jane Goldman and The Giver’s Michael Mitnick are among those who have completed drafts based on Carlo Collodi’s book, but Downey hasn’t yet found what he’s looking for, even tweaking the script himself in recent months.

It doesn’t immediately sound like something Anderson would tackle, but the chance to see him bring his ideas and style to a fairy tale film has major appeal – it would certainly be something different. And the friendship between the Inherent Vice writer/director and Downey Jr. means they’re eager to work together. Fingers crossed this one works out and is amazing…
