Jurassic World Still Ruling The US Box Office

Jurassic World Still Ruling The US Box Office

But Pixar's Inside Out is a winner for the studio

Jurassic-World-Still-Ruling-US-Box-Office

Given the film’s massive, record-breaking and year-to-date-dominating opening, it was a foregone conclusion that Jurassic World would once more roar at the top of the American box office charts. And so it has come to pass, with the dino-filled blockbuster earning $102 million for its second weekend, with $393.2 million domestically and passing $981.3 million worldwide, according to studio estimates.

The records just kept coming as the week progressed, and it’ll join the billion-dollar club tomorrow, smashing past the recent 17-day milestone set by Fast & Furious 7. Still, since both properties are at Universal, the studio won’t have any complaints.

And while Disney/Pixar might be disappointed that Inside Out is the first film from the Emeryville gang not to debut at the top of the North American charts, it’s still a huge success for the company, with $91 million representing its second-highest opening ever after Toy Story 3. And Inside Out claimed its own record, crashing through Avatar’s $77 million debut for an original property despite playing on fewer screens. It’s worth noting that a certain other slightly popular Disney movie, called Frozen, opened in second place back in 2013 and that went on to do decent business. Given Inside Out’s warm reception with audiences and the fact that it still has to launch in the majority of its international territories, and the film should enjoy a long, successful run.

Melissa McCarthy’s Spy was pushed down from second to third, earning $10.5 million and San Andreas rumbled to fourth on $8.2 million. New release coming-of-age tale Dope opened slightly lower than hoped, launching fifth with $6 million.

Insidious Chapter 3 slipped to sixth, earning $4.1 million, while Pitch Perfect 2 fell to seventh and $3.3 million. Mad Max: Fury Road fell one place to eighth with $2.8 million with Avengers: Age Of Ultron down in ninth with $2.7 million and Tomorrowland bringing up the rear and preparing to leave the top 10 with $2 million.

New Writer For Vin Diesel's Kojak

New Writer For Vin Diesel's Kojak

Philip Gawthorne signs on to write the next draft

New-Writer-For-Diesels-Kojak

The idea of Vin Diesel inheriting Telly Savalas’ iconic role as Lt. Theo Kojak fills us with both the idea of intriguing possibilities and the nagging image of Kojak saying “who loves ya, baby?” while tonguing a lolipop as a car careens off a roof top. Still the one-man movie machine remains committed to taking it on, and has writer Philip Gawthorne working on a new draft of the script.

Universal – which we imagine will indulge almost any whim of Vin’s these days given the potent box office for Fast & Furious 7 – is backing the project which at one point the actor (according to his Facebook page) wanted Ang Lee to direct. We’re not there by a long stretch, but development is continuing, with playwright and EastEnders/Casualty veteran Gawthorne scoring job after job in Hollywood. He’s already at work on the Cube remake for Lionsgate and has co-written medieval action spec World Breaker with William Eubank.

Kojak, which would adapt the cop show that ran between 1973 and 1978, is apparently now intended to be a character-based franchise, so don’t go thinking it’ll necessarily be a Fast clone. A previous draft of the script came from Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, but there’s no word on when it might actually head into production.

First Trailer For Daddy's Home

First Trailer For Daddy's Home

Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are competitive dads

Father’s Day weekend seems like the right time to post a trailer featuring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell’s comedy reunion Daddy’s Home. To see the pair as competitive pops, check out the first footage below.

The film, which casts the Other Guys co-stars as rivals, finds Ferrell as a mild-mannered radio executive who has comfortably settled into life as a step-dad with wife Linda Cardellini and her two kids. But his world is upended when the children’s dead-beat real dad Dusty Mayron (Wahlberg) appears back in their lives, bringing abs, gifts and the sort of powerful bond only a real father can apparently offer, even if he hasn’t exactly in the running for Dad Of The Year.

Ferrell, naturally threatened by this interloper, becomes competitive, and a war begins for the hearts of the kids and Cardellini that encompasses tree houses, ponies, motorbikes and even a dunk contest at a local basketball game. Suffice to say, it doesn’t seem to be going well for Ferrell. The pair has an easy comic chemistry, and Wahlberg’s clearly having fun playing up the bad boy dad stuff.

With Horrible Bosses 2 duo Sean Anders and John Morris behind the camera and Brian Burns on script duty, Daddy’s Home also features Thomas Haden Church, Paul Scheer, Hannibal Buress and Alessandra Ambrosio. The film will be out here on December 25. Happy Dad-Mass?

David Tennant Aboard Chew Comic Adaptation

David Tennant Aboard Chew Comic Adaptation

Felicia Day and Steven Yeun already set for the 'toon

David-Tennant-Chew-Adaptation

Not content with joining the Marvel TV universe via his role on upcoming Netflix series Jessica Jones, David Tennant is taking on another comic book-based role, albeit one a little more obscure. He’s taking on one of the main roles in animated adventure Chew, adapted from the Image Comics title.

He joins geek icon (and Supernatural recurring veteran) Felicia Day and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun in the story, adapted from the comic by original writer John Layman, who created the title with artist Rob Guillory. Jeff Krelitz is directing and co-producing the movie.

Chew is set in a world where bird meats such as chicken and turkey have been outlawed (Nand-noooooo!) following a bird flu outbreak that killed millions of Americans. Yeun voices a detective who is a “cibopath”, meaning he receives psychic impressions from whatever he eats. He’s in a relationship with a food writer (Day) who can craft the idea of whatever she reviews so precisely that the reader can taste it, and has to face off against Mason Savoy (Tennant), his mentor who has since become a villain.

The project is tinged with a little sadness: all was proceeding ahead last year when Robin Williams, who had been in negotiations to play Savoy, suddenly died. Tennant has a very different style, but we’re interested to see what colours he brings to it.

Tennant was back on UK screens in the second series of Broadchurch and is set to work on indie drama I Feel Fine. He will, as mentioned, crop up as the villainous Zebediah Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, which should be hitting Netflix later this year.

Julia Stiles Back For More Bourne

Julia Stiles Back For More Bourne

Nicky Parsons will return

Julia-Stiles-More-Bourne

Talk about timing! Mere days after Empire talked to Julia Stiles about her latest film and discussed the chances of her returning to the Bourne franchise now that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are aboard, news arrives that she will indeed be back as Nicky Parsons.

The nervy Nicky has been a presence in the three Jason Bourne-centric films, and becomes the first character beyond Damon’s to be confirmed for the latest, as-yet-untitled movie. Alicia Vikander is reportedly being sought to join them, but she hasn’t made any sort of deal just yet.

As for what the formerly amnesiac superspy will be up against this time? Nothing has been revealed yet, though we do know that Greengrass is at work on the script with Christopher Rouse and Frank Marshall will be back in the producer’s chair. The new Bourne, whatever it may end up being called, is set for release on July 29, 2016.

Stiles has supernatural thriller Out Of The Dark on DVD now and will be seen in The Great Gilly Hopkins, Go With Me, Border Crossing and Beyond Deceit
