Nia Long Heads For Keanu

Nia Long Heads For Keanu

Jason Mitchell also aboard the Key & Peele comedy film

Nia-Long-Keanu

Comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are bringing their humour to the big screen in more concentrated fashion with oddball comedy Keanu. They’ve rounded up a fair ensemble already and are now adding Nia Long and Jason Mitchell.

The pair, whose Key & Peele show regularly has spawned several viral videos while doing good business on US TV’s Comedy Central, is behind the new idea, which Peele wrote with Alex Ruben. The story, nothing – one assumes, at least – to do with the John Wick star, finds the duo as part of a group of friends who must retrieve a stolen cat. But instead of heading to the police station, they pose as gangsters and drug dealers, because that’s apparently how you should really try to find stolen pets or anything else. We’re fairly certain that plotline was in an early draft of Paddington

Long is apparently set as the wife of Key’s character – which is strange, as previous reports had Gabrielle Union playing that role. Perhaps there has been a scheduling snafu, or Union is taking another part in the film. Mitchell, meanwhile, is in an unspecified role. They Join Will Forte, Nadiyah Skyy Taylor, Darrell Britt-Gibson and Method Man in the cast for the comedy, which director Peter Atencio is now shooting in New Orleans. Keanu will be out in the US on April 22 next year, but has yet to schedule a UK date.

Long is currently working on the TV reboot of 1989 John Hughes comedy Uncle Buck, which is scheduled to arrive on US screens this autumn. Mitchell is playing Eazy-E in NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton, set for release in the UK on August 28.

Eli Roth Catches Giant Shark Thriller Meg

Eli Roth Catches Giant Shark Thriller Meg

Jurassic shark, anyone?

Eli-Roth-Meg

Meg is one of those movies that has been floating in development hell for such a long time, it’s almost shocking when it actually seem to be surfacing at last. But it’s true: Warner Bros. has Eli Roth in talks to direct the giant prehistoric shark movie

What is Meg, you ask? Well, if the words “giant prehistoric shark” weren’t an adequate tip-off, it’s the story of two men – deep sea diver Jonas Taylor and pal Masao Tanaka – who have to stop a group of giant megalodons that have survived to the present day from escaping the Mariana Trench and heading to California’s coastline. They aren’t, as you might expect, all that successful in containing all the creatures, and that’s when it becomes really, really unsafe to go back into the water. For the new version of the film, the location has been switched to China rather than California, a little wrinkle that has helped score the country’s Gravity Pictures to share the production cost.

Steve Alten’s source novel, called MEG, hit shelves in 1997 and saw its rights snapped up by Disney that same year, which put it into turnaround when Deep Blue Sea came and went without striking enough of a chord to generate sharkmania. In that time, it has gone through various drafts and looked like it might be made more than once, including an announcement by New Line that it had snagged the rights and would be releasing the thriller in 2008, a pledge it withdrew before any real production on the film could start. Alten took the rights back and has since struck a deal with Atelles Entertainment and Maeday Productions to work on a film with Warners. Dean Georgaris has written the most recent draft of the script, which is apparently part of the reason why the studio is pushing for it to arrive at last. And the big opening weekend for Jurassic World won’t hurt at all, plus the fact that Alten has several sequel novels that could fuel a potential series of films.

Roth, assuming he takes the gig (and he has been very interested in the toothy beasts recently, hosting the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week this year), could be the right man to balance the campier elements with the appropriate horror tone, which will be a feat to manage in this era of Sharknado and its cheesy ilk. The director’s next film to hit our shores, Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock, lands next week.

Chris Pratt's Passengers Finally Taking Off At Sony

Chris Pratt's Passengers Finally Taking Off At Sony

Jennifer Lawrence co-stars in the sci-fi drama

Passengers-Taking-Off-Sony

Call it the Jurassic World halo effect. Sony has had science fiction romantic drama Passengers sitting on the launch pad for a while now, debating whether to film it or ditch it over budget issues. But thanks to the huge smash success of Chris Pratt’s dino-outing, the green light is flashing on the film, which will co-star another in-demand actor in Jennifer Lawrence

The Imitation Game’s Morten Tyldum is still attached to direct the story of a spaceship transporting thousands of human colonists to a distant planet. The script, written by Jon Spaihts, chronicles what happens when a malfunction causes one of them (Pratt) to be rudely awakened 90 years before anyone else. Unable to fix the situation and seemingly doomed to spend his time dying alone, he decides to take the unusual and controversial step of waking up a fellow passenger (Lawrence).

Sony’s new boss Tom Rothman had been trying to figure out whether the company could handle the pricey budget (around $120 million with tax breaks) and compensation for the stars. But thanks to Pratt’s big new success, he’s not only getting paid, but he’s receiving a slightly boosted fee, though one still dwarfed by his Oscar-winning co-star’s salary.

It’s not the first time the film has had to endure the rigours of the studio system – it has moved from the Weinstein Company (where it was budgeted at $35 million with Keanu Reeves and Reese Witherspoon orbiting the leads) and Warner Bros., which had Rachel McAdams circling with a $65 million price tag. Now, however, Tyldum looks set to start the cameras rolling in September on what Sony is hoping might turn out as a blend of Gravity and a romantic drama.

First Trailer For Crime Drama Captive

First Trailer For Crime Drama Captive

David Oyelowo is a prisoner on the run

Taking its subject matter from a real-life story, while changing enough that it uses the phrase “inspired by” the actual events, the crime drama Captive puts David Oyelowo and Kate Mara in a room together and lets the performance sparks fly. Check out the first trailer for the film.

Captive finds Oyelowo as Brian Nicohls, a man in jail awaiting trial. Desperate to make contact with his newborn son, he murders the judge assigned to his case, escapes and becomes the subject of a manhunt across Atlanta led by a driven detective (Michael K. Williams).  Across town, there is Ashley Smith (Mara), a young woman struggling with her own issues. A recovering meth addict, she’s trying to punch the clock on a minimum wage job and painfully missing her daughter, who was taken from her by the state.

Their lives crash into each other when Brian takes Ashley hostage in her own apartment and the two must find a way to deal with the situation. Ashley digs up a book she’s been given – Rick Warren’s advice book A Purpose Driven Life – and reads it to Nichols per his demand, an act that changes both of them. It does seem a little like one big advert for the book, but hopefully the talent involved raises it to something more than the latest attempt to nab a Christian audience.

Brian Bird adapted the script from the real Smith’s memoir An Unlikely Angel and the film will arrive in the US on September 18. There’s no sign of a UK date yet.
