Disney Plans A Maleficent Sequel

Disney Plans A Maleficent Sequel

Writer Linda Woolverton is aboard to script it

Maleficent-Sequel-Planned

While it might not have hit the stratospheric heights of Alice In Wonderland, last year’s live-action fairy tale origin story Maleficent was certainly a winner at the box office, with more than $758 million at the global box office. Practice your surprised face, then, ready for the news that Disney is planning a sequel

It’s early days for the follow-up as yet, and the Mouse House has only gone so far as to engage the services of Maleficent/Alice screenwriter Linda Woolverton to come up with the script for this one. And naturally, the studio is staying in contact with Angelina Jolie, whose presence would almost certainly be required (what with her being, you know, Maleficent), but she doesn’t have a deal yet. Aside from the Kung Fu Panda and Tomb Raider films, she’s not really one for sequels, but Disney will no doubt be able to offer a good deal.

The first film explored a lot of her life, from her early days to how she interconnected with the events of Sleeping Beauty, so we’re wondering what she’ll be up to next. Perhaps she’ll fix some other realm’s magical problems or even become a roving do-gooder who constantly has to explain to people that she’s not actually evil?

Rupert Wyatt Will Direct X-Men Standalone Movie Gambit

Rupert Wyatt Will Direct X-Men Standalone Movie Gambit

The Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes man goes superheroic

Rupert-Wyatt-Gambit

Given that it had a pre-assigned release date set for next year, 20th Century Fox’s latest stab at bringing X-Men hero Gambit to the screen needed to start moving quickly. With Channing Tatum long since attached in the lead, the film has now zeroed in on a director with The Gambler’s Rupert Wyatt on board.

Wyatt, who has a little bit of experience marshalling spectacle and special effects thanks to his work on Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, is the man Fox feels can best handle the story of the New Orleans mutant gambler and rogue (small “r”, though he has a long and slightly creepy romantic history with Rogue herself) who can throw playing cards as weapons as he generates and manipulates kinetic energy.

Josh Zetumer has written the script for the stand-alone adventure, though there’s a chance Gambit may turn up in X-Men: Apocalypse, even if it’s just in a post-credit sequence. Which we’d like to see, if only for Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool to show up and complain that he didn’t get a shot at such a sequence. Gambit is set to arrive in cinemas both here and Stateside on October 7 next year.

Christian Bale On For The Promise

Christian Bale On For The Promise

Oscar Isaac also starring in the indie drama

Christian-Bale-The-Promise

Though he’s had to put plans to star as Travis McGee in the adaptation of The Deep Blue Good-By on hold thanks to a torn knee ligament, Christian Bale is still lining up other work for when he’s fully recovered. One such job is co-starring with Oscar Isaac in The Promise.

Hotel Rwanda/Reservation Road director Terry George is calling the shots on this one, based on the script he wrote with Robin Swicord. The Promise is set in the dying days of the Ottoman Empire (so the 1920s, then) and explores the relationships between three people: Michael (Isaac), a gifted medical student, Chris (Bale), a renowned American journalist working in Paris and the beautiful and sophisticated Ana, with that final role of the triumvirate yet to be cast.

All being well – and assuming Bale doesn’t break a leg or something – George plans to have the cameras rolling this autumn in Portugal and the Canary Islands. Tough job, there…

Bale will be seen in Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups and Weightless, and is at work on Adam McKay’s financial drama The Big Short. He’s also provided a voice for Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book: Origins, which is due to arrive here in 2017. As for Isaac, the in-demand actor is filming X-Men: Apocalypse, out on May 19 next year and will be seen in the slightly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which lands on December 18.
