Though he’s primarily known at the moment for comedy on TV screens as the endlessly annoying political wonk Jonah Ryan on Veep, actor Timothy Simons has been enjoying a run of dramatic work in cinemas. That is set to continue with him joining the cast of Stephen Gaghan’s Gold, which stars Matthew McConaughey.
The film, which has a script from Patrick Massett and John Zinman, tells the story of the 1993 Bre-X Corporation mining scandal. The plot follows a rough-around-the-edges prospector Kenny Wells (McConaughey) who stumbles upon one of the largest gold mines in the world in the Indonesian jungle. Which, you may not be surprised to learn given the word “scandal” before, turned out to be bogus.
Simons is aboard to play a Wall Street banker who must leave his cushy corporate surroundings and travel to the jungles of Borneo to assess the company run by Wells and his geologist partner, played by Edgar Ramirez. He joins a cast that also includes Michelle Williams and Joshua Harto. Gaghan is gearing up to start production next month in Thailand, Mexico and New York.
In addition to Veep (which is just ending its fourth season), Simons has Goosebumps (February 10 next year), Melissa McCarthy’s Michelle Darnell (June 10) and indie biographical drama Christine already on the way.
New comedy The House already has one former Saturday Night Live cast member in Will Ferrell, who is producing and starring. It’s attracted the attention of a second: Amy Poehler, who is in negotiations to play his wife.
Written by Bad Neighbours duo Brendan O’Brien and Andrew J. Cohen (with Cohen making his directorial debut on the project), The House follows a couple that manage to spend their daughter’s college fund. Desperate to round up some new moolah – and to earn their sprog’s respect again - they team up with a few neighbours to open up an illegal casino in the 'burbs. Naturally, things will go comically wrong.
New Line is backing the film to the tune of $40 million and is figuring on a shoot this August in Los Angeles ready for a 2016 release date.
Poehler will next be heard rather than seen in Pixar’s Inside Out, which will be in UK cinemas on July 24. She’s also one of the original returning cast members appearing in Wet Hot American Summer prequel miniseries First Day Of Camp, which will be hit Netflix on July 31. And she’ll be back co-starring with regular collaborator Tina Fey in Sisters, which has a January 15, 2016 release date on the books.
