Jurassic World Stomps The US Box Office

Jurassic World Stomps The US Box Office

And the film is indomitable around the world

Jurassic-World-Stomps-US-Box-Office

Looks like the pent-up demand for a decent dinosaur-filled adventure film was enough to make Jurassic World a – wait for it, you know it’s coming, but you’re going to cringe anyway – monster hit at the box office both in the US and around the world, with its domestic haul now standing at $204.6 million after just one weekend.

That makes it the most successful opening of the year, and the second biggest since The Avengers back in 2012. And that triumph was not limited to Stateside audiences – as the movie earned more than $511.8 million on its first weekend globally, opening top of the charts everywhere it launched, and marking the first time a film has grossed more than $500 million in a single weekend. Suffice to say, Universal is having a slightly good year, between Furious 7, Fifty Shades Of Grey, Pitch Perfect 2 and now this. We expect genetic development on a sequel (or even a shared Jurassic Park cinematic universe) is already underway at the studio.

Sensibly, no other studios put out a wide release to compete with the new beast (though both Me And Earl And The Dying Girl and The Wolfpack opened strong in limited release). That meant few changes in the rest of the charts aside from some slight juggling. Melissa McCarthy’s Spy was pushed to second place, but still took in $16 million for a $56.9 million US total so far. San Andreas shifted to third with $11 million, while Insidious Chapter 3 fell to fourth, earning $7.3 million and Pitch Perfect 2 actually jumped up a spot to round out the top five with $6 million and more than $170 million in its Stateside coffers to date.

Entourage fell a couple of places to sixth as its primarily bro-centric audience channelled their inner kids and went with dinosaurs instead, making $4.3 million. Mad Max: Fury Road also dipped a little, with $4.1 million in seventh. Former 2015 box office opening champ Avengers: Age Of Ultron stayed in eighth place, adding $3.6 million to its more than $444 million US total, ahead of the faltering Tomorrowland in ninth ($3.4 million) and Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy, which added screens and brought in $1.7 million for 10th place.

Rainn Wilson, Demi Lovato And More Voicing Get Smurfy

Rainn Wilson, Demi Lovato And More Voicing Get Smurfy

As Sony brings the Smurfs back with pure animation

Get-Smurfy-Voice-cast

The news broke in January that Sony had decided to stop making live-action/CG blended films with the Smurfs and switch back to just CG animated adventures for a new origin story. Mandy Patinkin was announced as Papa Smurf back then, with Rainn Wilson and Demi Lovato joining him for what we now know is called Get Smurfy.

Sony used Global Smurfs Day (that is, at time of writing, today) to fully announce the new movie, which aims to harken back to Smurfs creator Peyo Culliford’s original style of the creatures in a story that finds the small blue characters searching the Enchanted Forest for the Smurf village, while tackling questions such as why there is only one girl – Lovato’s Smurfette – among them.  “We felt it was important to take a very different approach with this origin story. It returns to the roots of Peyo’s creation in this CG animated adventure,” says executive producer Jordan Kerner. “I hope it will delight not only fans but audiences worldwide. We couldn’t be more excited with the talented new cast we’re starting to assemble for our Smurfy reboot. ”

They’ll face the usual trouble from the evil sorcerer Gargamel (Wilson), who has devious plans for the Smurfs. Shrek 2’s Kelly Asbury is directing the film, which is set for release on March 31, 2017.

The Gift Trailer Stalks Online

The Gift Trailer Stalks Online

Joel Edgerton brings trouble for Adam Scott and Rebecca Hall

Alongside his healthy career in front of the camera, Joel Edgerton has been a writer and producer for a while now, helping the likes of David Michod get movies made. Now he’s taking on the director’s chair for the first time, bringing us a stalker drama called The Gift.

Adam Scott and Rebecca Hall star as Simon and Robyn, a successful married couple with a nice house and happy life that is proceeding as they planned it. But then comes a chance encounter with Simon’s high school acquaintance, Gordo (Edgerton), whom Simon initially doesn’t recognize – or seemingly doesn’t want to – but who soon starts trying to ingratiate himself into their world.

But even as the couple decide he’s just a little too off to keep visiting them, things start to take an even darker turn, and the truth of what occurred between Simon and Gordo 20 years ago leaks out. As Robyn learns the terrible truth, she starts to wonder about the people closest to her…

Putting itself firmly in psychological thriller territory, Edgerton’s debut comes to us via the Blumhouse team, and promises to deliver some of the chills we’ve come to associate with the team behind The Purge and Sinister. It’ll trouble UK cinemas on August 7.

Anna Paquin And More Aboard Pixar's The Good Dinosaur

Anna Paquin And More Aboard Pixar's The Good Dinosaur

The studio is changing the voice cast

Anna-Paquin-Good-Dinosaur

Looks like it isn’t just the creative and story side that have seen a change for Pixar’s late 2015 release, The Good Dinosaur. Deadline reports that the voice cast has also been overhauled, with Anna Paquin, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Zahn, Raymond Ochoa, Jack Bright, AJ Buckley, Sam Elliott and Marcus Scribner all now aboard.

Originally targeting a summer 2014 release, the film – which was to have featured John Lithgow, Frances McDormand, Lucas Neff, Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris and Judy Greer – was pulled from the schedule for some serious re-tooling and moved to November this year. Original co-director Pete Sohn moved into the top spot, replacing Bob Peterson and the story has been shifted.

Some of the elements will remain the same, in that the basic story finds an Apatosaurus named Arlo (Ochoa) separated from his family, who comes across a human cave-boy orphan he named Spot (Bright). Wright is taking over as Arlo’s dad, while Zahn will be a pterodactyl named Thunderclap, Paquin, Elliott and Buckley as a T-Rex family named Ramsey, Butch and Nash, and Scribner set as Arlo’s brother, Buck. Pixar will no doubt be hoping that the dino-fever rekindled by the success of Jurassic World will help the film’s chances.

The Good Dinosaur will be out in the US on November 25 before heading here on November 27.

New Imagery For The Martian

New Imagery For The Martian

Matt Damon: still lost in space

20th Century Fox definitely wants to keep science fiction drama The Martian on our radar screens. With the trailer (sitting at the bottom of the page) and a featurette already online, here comes some new imagery from the movie. {New Martian Images}

Based on Andy Weir’s bestseller, the film finds a manned mission to Mars going chaotically wrong when a massive storm hits. Presumed dead, botanist Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left behind as the rest of the crew, led by Commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) head back home in their ship, the Hermes. But Watney is merely injured, and, as he contemplates trying to survive on the Red Planet with a limited number of supplies, he finds a way to contact Earth. There, the likes of NASA official Teddy Sanders must find some method to rescue him, even as Lewis and the crew of the Hermes risk treason charges to come to Watney’s aid.

Ridley Scott’s behind the camera for this one, directing from a script by Drew Goddard. The new images offer a glimpse at people besides Damon’s Watney and his fellow space-goers, with the likes of Kristen Wiig’s Earthbound NASA media relations specialist Annie Montrose pictured.

Featuring a cast that also includes Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Michael Pena, Aksel Hennie, Mackenzie Davis, Sean Bean, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Naomi Scott, The Martian recently shifted to an earlier October release date for the States, though that change has yet to be reflected in the UK. For more on the film, check out our trailer breakdown, which features input from Ridley Scott himself.
