If you saw Big Hero 6 back in January, you’ll also have seen the charming short ‘toon Feast that preceded it. Now the short’s director is swapping Disney Feature Animation for Fox Animation as Patrick Osborne is attached to direct Nimona for the company.
Noelle Stevenson’s bestselling title is a genre mash tale of a futuristic yet medieval world where knights visit nightclubs and ride hover boards. The story follows a young shape shifter who partners with a not-so-evil supervillain to help him take down the regime. The project started as a web comic while Stevenson was a student, and has since scored her both the Harvey and Eisner Awards. You can get a taste of it right here.

With the success of Pitch Perfect 2, Elizabeth Banks is looking to keep her fledgling directorial career moving. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she’s now in talks to direct young adult adaptation Red Queen for Universal.
Victoria Aveyard’s book, which was published in February as part of a three-book deal, takes place in a world divided by blood colour. Ordinary folk have red, while silver is for those elite types with supernatural abilities. Our focus is on Mare, a 17-year-old who is just about making a living as a thief in a rural village. When a twist of fate leads to her saving the life of one of the royal court, she’s brought before the king and queen – and suddenly starts displaying powers of her own. To keep her under control, the king invents a backstory for her, and has her prepare to marry one of his sons. But she’s court between worlds as she becomes part of the silver community while helping a rebellion among the reds.
Breaking Bad veteran Gennifer Hutchison, who also works on Better Call Saul, has written the adaptation, and Banks could be a solid choice for the job given her own experiences with the Hunger Games films. Given the early stage of development for this one, however, she may not make it her next directing job.
Banks will be back on screens as an actor with Magic Mike XXL, due here on July 3 and is returning to the world of Wet Hot American Summer for Netflix prequel series First Day Of Camp. And then there’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which will be out on November 20.

In January, it was revealed that Marvel was interested in Chiwetel Ejiofor for a role in Doctor Strange alongside Benedict Cumberbatch. It looks like he’s closing in – though there has been no official announcement from Marvel – as Deadline has sniffed out the fact that Ejiofor is in line to play Baron Mordo.
While speculation around the news originally pointed to Ejiofor up for the role of the Ancient One, we now know that role has gone to Tilda Swinton. As for the main plot? Cumberbatch stars as the character originally conjured by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Dr. Stephen Strange starts his story as a selfish New York surgeon who loses his professional skills in a car crash. After falling on hard times, he visits a healer in the Himalayas known as the Ancient One, and learns to tap into psychic and magical powers. In recognition of his selfless efforts to thwart evil fellow disciple Baron Mordo (Ejiofor), he’s taught the mystical arts and sets out to defeat other shady sorcerers and various villains.
According to Deadline’s report, Mordo is likely to be less of a straightforward villain and a little more complicated in his allegiances, while potentially splicing in some elements of other Strange characters, but whether that becomes MCU canon or remains in the mists of rumour remains to be seen. Still, if Ejiofor ends up with the part, this is shaping up to be a strong cast.
Sinister’s Scott Derrickson is directing the film, working from a script by Jon Spaihts. With production scheduled for the UK this year, Doctor Strange will apparate into our cinemas on October 28, 2016.
