Terry Gilliam Reveals That Don Quioxte Will Be An Amazon Film

Terry Gilliam Reveals That Don Quioxte Will Be An Amazon Film

And he's dusting off other projects for the company

Terry-Gilliam-Don-Quoxte

Terry Gilliam always has to struggle to get his movies made or seen, but hopefully his new deal with Amazon to produce various projects might help a little with that. The director has revealed to The Playlist that the latest stab at his long-cherished The Man Who Killed Don Quixote will be part of that deal.

The film, which currently has Jack O’Connell and John Hurt in the lead roles, with the story now featuring Toby (O’Connell), a jaundiced commercials-director-for-hire who heads to Spain for a shoot where he encounters a mysterious gypsy (Hurt). The plan is for Gilliam to start shooting early next year, with Amazon handling the release at least in the US. “I’m intrigued by their way of doing it,” the director says. “They go into the cinemas first and then a month or two afterwards they go into streaming. And I think that’s good because you get a chance to see it on the big screen, and yet I know that more people have seen my films on DVD than they have in the cinemas and that’s the reality of life now.”

And he’s clear on why this is a good company to be in business with. “Amazon and the like are interesting because they are all still in their formative stages. They’re not a bureaucracy that has been around for years like the studio system, and so they’re full of people that are open to new and fresh ideas. So it’s a good time to be working with people like that.”

There’s also the encouraging news that more of the stories he’s had floating in limbo could finally come to fruition. “I’ve got a couple other things I’m playing with,” he says. “A couple of old scripts that have been wallowing within the studio system; we’ve got them out, so we’re going to stretch them out. So what was going to become a two and a half hour movie will now become a six-eight part TV series.” He appears to confirm, or at least suggest that one of those targeted for such a transition is Defective Detective that he wrote years ago with Richard LaGravenese, which seems ripe for that treatment. Fingers, eyes, legs and toes crossed, then.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Headed To Comic-Con

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Headed To Comic-Con

J.J. Abrams and his cast will be in San Diego

Though it has been reported that one big arm of Disney’s mighty movie machine (Marvel) won’t be making its usual big appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, another hefty part of the Mouse House’s family will be represented – J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan and some of the cast are set to hit the massive Hall H on Friday July 10 to show off something from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

What exactly the secretive Abrams and co. will be showing remains to be seen, but we’d guess at least a new trailer if not some other footage. And the announcement on the franchise’s official site doesn’t mention who else from the cast and crew will be present, just that “special guests” will be there.

That’s just part of the Star Wars presence that will be hitting the event that day, with smaller panels on the world of Star Wars publishing, collectibles, Hasbro’s toys and a celebration of ILM as it hits its 40th anniversary (but is using its advanced technology to look 32 in photos). Might we also find out who has been hired to direct another of the Star Wars stand-alones following the departure of Josh Trank? It’s possible…

Chris Hemsworth Joins Paul Feig's Ghostbusters

Chris Hemsworth Joins Paul Feig's Ghostbusters

WE GOT ONE! (A receptionist, that is)

Chris-Hemsworth-Joins-Paul-Feig-Ghostbusters

Spy director Paul Feig has taken to Twitter to announce the next piece of casting news for his fresh take on Ghostbusters: Chris Hemsworth will be swapping Asgard for a desk job, as he’s on board to play an assistant in the new movie.

There are few details available about what he’ll actually up to, as Feig’s tweet merely mentions he’s “our receptionist”, which points to him inheriting a version of the Janine Melnitz role played by Annie Potts in both of the original movies. Deadline, meanwhile, dug through the casting assignments for the film and found a “male tech assistant” supporting lead role, which appears to be where Hemsworth is headed.

He joins a cast that already includes Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones in a new take on the Ghostbusters concept that aims to tell its own story, not just a version of the idea originally cooked up by Dan Aykroyd and the rest, with shooting starting soon for a 2016 release. For more on the idea, check out our Podcast chat with Feig at the bottom of the page.

Hemsworth will be seen stretching his comic muscles (plus, from the looks of the trailer, other parts of himself) in the new Vacation film, which drives on to UK screens on August 21.
