New Ricki And The Flash Trailer Rocks Up

Meryl Streep: good rocker, bad mother

The first trailer for Meryl Streep’s latest blend of warbling and performing – Ricki And The Flash – appeared just last month. Here comes the new one, which delivers a very similar feel with a few new snippets here and there. 

Jonathan Demme is behind the camera for this one, directing a Diablo Cody script about a rocker who essentially gave up everything for her chance at musical stardom. She’s used to being on tour, but when her long-suffering ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline) calls to say their daughter Julie (Streep’s real-life spawn Mamie Gummer) has been jilted by her husband-to-be, she’s forced to confront the realities of the family she left behind. Naturally, there’s a little re-bonding to be done, especially given that Julie isn’t the only one with matrimony on the mind – son Joshua (Sebastian Stan) is ready to elope with his girlfriend to avoid having his absent mother involved.

The film, which Cody based on her mother-in-law, a former New Jersey bar band lead singer, looks like it could be fun provided the treacle is kept in check. With Audra McDonald, Ben Platt and Rick Springfield also in the cast, Ricki And The Flash arrives in the UK on August 7. Exactly how it fits into the DC film universe given the presence of The Flash remains to be seen.

Marion Cotillard On For Robert Zemeckis' Next Film

Co-starring with Brad Pitt in an untitled spy thriller

Brad Pitt seems to be all about the war films at the moment, what with War Machine clanking into gear for Netflix, another World War Z film in development and this project, an untitled spy thriller set during World War II which, we now know, will co-star Marion Cotillard.

Robert Zemeckis is aboard to direct the period film, which will reportedly find Pitt and Cotillard as assassins who fall in love while working a mission to take out a German official. They end up getting hitched, but a spanner is thrown in their happiness when Pitt learns that his missus is actually a double agent for the Nazis and his next job will be to kill her.

It’s the latest script from Steven Knight, and while it had been aiming to kick off shooting in the autumn, Zemeckis and Pitt have asked for a delay so Zemeckis can promote The Walk and Pitt can fit in War Machine. And the shift means that Cotillard, who would have still been filming Assassin’s Creed alongside Michael Fassbender, will now be free to join up. She’ll next be seen, again with Fassbender, in Macbeth, which will be spilling blood on our screens come October 2.

Elisha Cuthbert Joins Goon: Last Of The Enforcers

She'll star alongside Seann William Scott

With co-writer and co-star Jay Baruchel taking the director’s chair for the Goon sequel, the further misadventures of Seann William Scott’s Doug “The Thug” Glatt is busy assembling its cast. First among the new faces for the follow-up is Elisa Cuthbert. 

The sequel – known as Goon: Last Of The Enforcers – finds Glatt and his team, the Halifax Highlanders back on the ice with a group of new players during a professional strike. Cuthbert will be the showy sister of Alison Pill’s Eva, with Liev Schreiber also back as rival hockey player Ross Rhea.

Baruchel is set to start calling the shots on June 21 in Toronto, with Scott busy getting back in fighting shape for the film. Cuthbert, who may still be best known as the cougar-adjacent Kim Bauer in 24, worked alongside Scott on Courteney Cox’s film directing debut, Just Before I Go. She most recently appeared in short-lived US TV sitcom One Big Happy.
