New No Escape Trailer Puts Owen Wilson And His Family In Danger

New No Escape Trailer Puts Owen Wilson And His Family In Danger

Welcome to Asia...

Relocating your family to a foreign land must seem like a fun adventure. But what if things turn violent and dangerous and you’re trapped in a hostile city with no support from your government? That’s the situation faced by Owen Wilson, Lake Bell and their family in No Escape, which has put a new trailer online.

Wilson and Bell play Jack and Annie Dwyer, a couple who relocate to an unnamed Asian country with their daughters Breeze and Lucy (Claire Geare and Sterling Jerins). At first things seem mostly okay, aside from a little homesickness and trouble with fluctuating power. And they’re welcomed by a friendly face in the shape of Pierce Brosnan’s long-time expat Hammond.

Then things go seriously pear-shaped when the country explodes into revolution and the rebels start tracking down and executing foreigners. On the run and without much in the way of support, Jack and his family must try to find a way out of the country, which given the title, might not be possible. Time to see if their child-hurling skills are up to snuff!

No Escape is a project that siblings Drew and John Erick Dowdle have been trying to put together for a while, with the pair co-writing and John handling the directorial chores. The film will be out in the UK on September 4.

First Look At Richard Armitage In The Pilgrimage

First Look At Richard Armitage In The Pilgrimage

A hard day's journey for a knight (and some monks)

Cast your mind back to March, when it was reported that Richard Armitage was part of the cast for medieval thriller Pilgrimage. As the film has just wrapped, there is pictorial evidence of the man himself, alongside co-stars Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland in new stills supplied via The Hollywood Reporter. {Pilgrimage Images}

The images – pilgrimages? We’ll get our coat – show the actors as 13th century monks who must escort their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome and find their faith severely tested en route when they discover that the item is not quite what they thought. And it attracts plenty of unwanted attention, which pressures them into joining forces with a knight (Armitage, who’s probably had his fill of armour for a while after the Hobbit trilogy and now this).

Bernthal plays mute member of the holy order who joined the monastery to make penance for his violent past, while Holland is a pious young novice. Brendan Muldowney called the shots on a production that ranged between Ireland and Belgium, working from a script by Jamie Hannigan. There’s no word on a release date yet, but footage from the film will be screened to potential buyers at the Toronto Film Festival and the American Film Market. We’ll take three frames! That’s how it works, right?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt On The Sandman Movie's Progress

Joseph Gordon-Levitt On The Sandman Movie's Progress

''It’s slow but steady...''

Joseph-Gordon-Levitt-Sandman-progress

It’s been more than a year since we heard much about Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s planned adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comic series. But while you might think the project has vanished into development hell like so many attempts before it, worry not: JGL is still working away on the idea

“It’s really good, man. It’s slow but steady,” he told MTV. “It’s a really complicated adaptation because those comics, they’re brilliant. But they’re not written as a whole. It’s not like Watchmen, which is a graphic novel that has a beginning, middle, and end. Sandman was written over the course of whatever — I forget exactly, six or seven years. One at a time. One little 20-page issue at a time. And to try to take that and make it into something that’s a feature film — a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end — is complicated.”

Gordon-Levitt says he has a vision for how he wants the film to work, and he’s been busy collaborating with David Goyer, Warner Bros. and Gaiman himself. He also knows what he doesn’t want the final movie to be. “Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing shit up. This has nothing to do with that,” he explained. “And it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me, he said ‘Don’t have any punching.’ Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn’t punch anybody. That’s not what he does. It’s going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary clichés. So, that’s why it’s taking a lot time to write, but it’s going to be really good.” So yes, no punchy-punchy, but hopefully lots of atmosphere.

Netflix Buys Brad Pitt's War Machine

Netflix Buys Brad Pitt's War Machine

The Rover's David Michod is directing the military satire

Netflix-Buys-Brad-Pitt's-War-Machine

Netflix has been making big inroads to acquire original content to go alongside the back catalogues it buys up. The company has made plenty of moves with TV, but is ramping up its efforts to make movies, dropping cash on deals with the likes of Adam Sandler and Idris Elba. Now it has made its biggest commitment yet, grabbing distribution rights to War Machine, which will star Brad Pitt.

Animal Kingdom and The Rover’s director David Michod will be behind the camera, and he’s also adapted the script from late journalist Michael Hastings’ book The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Inside Story Of America’s War In Afghanistan. Pitt will star as a top general in the US armed forces, overseeing the conflict and a mission that is riddled with problems, corruption and cock-ups. It’s all loosely based on General Stanley McChrystal, who oversaw the US operation in Afghanistan and thought himself the bee’s knees until he badmouthed the White House, was recalled and resigned.

Netflix aims to stump up the $30 million budget for the film, with a brief planned cinema run and then a late 2016 appointment with the company’s widespread streaming service. “War Machine is a rip-roaring, behind-the-facade tale of modern war decision-makers, from the corridors of power to the distant regions of America’s ambitions,” Ted Netflix chief content officer tells Deadline. “Brad and David are a perfect team to make this timely, compelling and entertaining film.” It’s yet another sign of how the business is shifting, and if it works – which might be tough to tell, given how reticent Netflix tends to be about talking figures – expect more big names to consider this sort of deal.

However it works out, we'd pay good money to see it include an hour of Don Cheadle improvising anecdotes about missions as a very different War Machine...
