Could Stephen Daldry's Wicked Film Fly On To The Big Screen Next Year?

Could Stephen Daldry's Wicked Film Fly On To The Big Screen Next Year?

Producer Marc Platt says maybe

Could-Wicked-Hit-2016

There has been talk of a film based on Gregory Maguire’s Wizard Of Oz-tweaking novel Wicked for years now. In fact, Universal was considering making a movie before the stage show became a massive hit. Having left some time to let the theatrical production roll on around the world, the studio seemed set to put the film back into a couple of years ago, with Stephen Daldry loosely attached to direct. Now, producer Marc Platt has addressed the possibility that it’ll arrive in cinemas next year.

The speculation arrived when the Vue Cinema chain listed the film as a 2016 release. But Platt, talking to Film Divider, is cagier. “It’s not set in stone. The process of developing that movie has begun, we’re working on it, and whether it makes 2016 or not, I’m not so sure. It’s a loose goal. But the bar is very high for the creators of Wicked. Our show is still so strong everywhere, and we just set a record in both London and Edinburgh last week, and in Los Angeles, and we did on Broadway. Audiences enjoy that show so much that we are intending to move forward on the movie but aren’t going to do so until we’re satisfied in the material we have as a screenplay, and that the film will be every bit as satisfying as what we have on the stage.”

There’s also the small matter that the film would require a fair amount of effects work to bring the story of young witches Elphaba and Glinda in Oz to life as they deal with clashing love lives and political views. The show’s book writer Winnie Holzman is on script duty and Daldry remains attached. But Platt and co. want to wait until it’s truly in shape. “We’re going to scrutinise our work on the screenplay and our prep on the movie, and when we feel like it’s ready, okay. We’re not going to shoot a release date is what I’m saying. It’s in the works, it’s not in a rush.”

Wicked will be out… When it’s good and ready, apparently.

The People's Choice Winner For Best Movie Probably Isn't What You Expect

Last night the 2015 People's Choice Awards took place at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, and winners for all types of fan-favorite entertainment were announced from Movie, TV, and Music categories. There were a few surprising and unexpected choices within the Movie categories of winners, but possibly most surprising of all was the biggest award of the night, Favorite Movie. The public's votes were counted, and the Best Movie (as deemed by the people who vote on PeoplesChoice.com) went to Maleficent. I bet you weren't expecting Maleficent—I sure wasn't. The film also won Favorite Family Movie at the ...

Why James Gunn Never Thought Guardians Of The Galaxy's Screenplay Would Be Nominated

Guardians of the Galaxy director and screenwriter James Gunn deserves a big round of applause. Not only was his Marvel movie about an obscure comic book team one of the biggest hits of the year, it was also recently nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay by the Writers Guild of America, something Gunn was floored by. It turns out he had a good reason for his surprise. Gunn released a statement on his ever-popular Facebook page (the same page on which he likes to post hilariously creative GOTG fan art) to express the honors he feels to receive the award. Though, ...

How Many Lens Flares Are In J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Movies?

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films are just as famous for their amount of lens flare as they are for being ruthlessly entertaining slices of sci-fi cinema. In fact, one eagle-eyed Star Trek fan has now gone to great lengths to count the amount of lens flare used in both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, and in the process has revealed that J.J. Abrams uses the special effect an astonishing 721 times just in the origin story alone. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Because in Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams tries to overdose ...

Reese Witherspoon Is Reuniting With Her Election Director For This Weirdo Movie

Reese Witherspoon has transformed herself from a rom-com queen into an Oscar front-runner. She was nominated for Best Actress by the Golden Globes for Wild, and she seems like a lock for an Oscar nomination, as well. So what's next for Witherspoon 2.0? She'll be re-teaming with the director of one of her most famous early works for a story that's...well, basically like Ant-Man minus the heroics. As reported by The Wrap, Reese Witherspoon is joining the cast of Downsizing, which is directed by Alexander Payne. Aside from some Oscar nominations for his recent Nebraska, Witherspoon also knows Payne from ...
