5 Big Hobbit Things You Have To Know Before Seeing The Battle Of The Five Armies

Much like the books they are based on, Peter Jackson's Middle-earth movies are rather dense films. There's not only an impressive number of characters to follow and plots to keep up with, but J.R.R. Tolkein also established a world with a full and rich history – and Jackson has worked to try and stay true to as much of it as possible. As a result, the 12-month span between sequels can lead to some details being forgotten – but that's why we're here to help. Having seen The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, we've singled out five key ...

The Sony Hackers Threaten 9/11-Style Attacks On Movie Theaters

The Sony Hacking Scandal just took a dark and disturbing turn. The responsible parties officially released a message this morning, promising 9/11 style attacks on any movie theaters that show the upcoming Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy The Interview. The threatening message came following an earlier promise of a Christmas Present. At the time, most assumed the present would be additional pieces of compromised data including but not limited to emails, scripts and personal information, but obviously, this took a much more serious turn. You can read the entirety of the warning below, courtesy of Variety... Warning We will clearly ...

Iron Man Might Not Be In The Hulkbuster Armor, Here's Why

The Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer has been out for nearly two months, and there's still plenty to digest from those two minutes of action. One of the preview's main mysteries is the battle between Hulk and Tony Stark's Hulkbuster armor. What could possibly lead to these two throwing down in fisticuffs? Naturally Hulk is the first one to blame because of his anger issues. After all, he has a habit of going wild in the comics. However, now we may have another answer for how this conflict comes about, and it comes from a box of toy bricks. The ...

Why Tim Burton Doesn't Like The Marvel Superhero Movies

In some respects, Tim Burton is the godfather of this current superhero movie craze. Burton, along with Richard Donner, succeeded in making comic book movies of substance, and the success of Burton's Batman films (as well as Donner's Superman) planted the seed of what potentially could be accomplished by a major studio. Christopher Nolan might have escalated the process, but Burton laid the foundation. So now that he's critiquing the formula, it's interesting to see how (and if) contemporary filmmakers might react. Tim Burton has shifted genres multiple times since directing Batman, dabbling in the macabre – as usual – but also ...

Pixels Posters Strike The Planet

Pixels Posters Strike The Planet

Attack of the blocks

You have to feel for the big, iconic cities of the world. If they’re not being lashed by crummy weather, they’re being targeted by alien invaders and other cinematic catastrophes. With Pixels, giant versions of video game enemies are attacking locales such as London, Paris and San Francisco. {Pixels Posters}

Yes, the likes of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Eifel Tower and our own Houses of Parliament are once more being assaulted, this time by Pac-Man, Centipede and Space Invaders. It’s all in service of Adam Sandler’s new action comedy, which finds extra-terrestrials misreading video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war. They decide to attack us using versions of ships and other icons from games and mankind has to fight back. To help out, the US President (Kevin James) recruits his childhood friend and former video game champ (Sandler) to lead a group of old-school arcade players.

Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad and Michelle Monaghan and Brian Cox are all aboard the film, with Chris Columbus behind the camera, working from Tim Herlihy and Tim Dowling’s script. Pixels will be out here on August 14.

Tom Hanks Squares The Circle

Tom Hanks Squares The Circle

Adapting Dave Eggers' novel

Tom-Hanks-The-Circle

Tom Hanks clearly has a thing for working on films adapted from Dave Eggers’ books – he’s already part of Tom Tykwer’s upcoming A Hologram For The King. And the actor/producer is now teaming up with The Spectacular Now writer James Ponsoldt for another Eggers tome, The Circle.

In a somewhat topical tale, The Circle follows a young woman hired to work for the titular Internet megacorp. The idea behind the company is uniting users email, social media, banking and online shopping in its universal operating system as one identity, with this leading to a new age of transparency and civility. But of course, it’s not that simple – and the story becomes a thriller that exploits the dangers of a digital life where all personal data is collected and pervasive surveillance means that privacy is a thing of the past.

Ponsoldt, who also wrote and directed Smashed, is back on double duty for this one, which doesn’t yet have a studio home, but is expected to land somewhere following what should be a brisk bidding war.

Hanks will next be seen in Hologram For The King, Ithaca and Steven Spielberg’s new, untitled Cold War thriller, none of which have a UK release date yet.

Star Wars: Who The Hell Is Captain Phasma?

Last week brought the clever, trading card-themed release of several character names for Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. That adorable droid that looks like a mash-up of a soccer ball and R2-D2 is named BB-8. The sith with that arguably awesome lightsaber is named Kylo Ren, and Jason Boyega's character is named Finn. However, the name that has really got Star Wars fans talking is Captain Phasma. Who exactly is Captain Phasma? Prior to Disney's character name release, Disney filed copyright applications for each of their characters names that were a part of the release. However, Stitch Kingdom ...
