Major Crimes Creator Previews "Acting Out"

Major Crimes | Photo Credits: Tyler Golden/TNT

Girl meets boy; girl loses boy; girl gets boy back again: it's a simple, easily extrapolated formula for great story telling. For example, boy has superpowers; boy loses superpowers; boy gets superpowers back again. Or, lightly summarizing one of the latest and more enjoyable iterations of this concept, Chef has restaurant; Chef loses restaurant; Chef gets restaurant back again. Actually, in its many various guises, the dramatization of the second chance is the underlying premise of more plays, films and novels than I could shake my pen at, and it's continuing popularity indicates that a desire for one more (better-informed) swing at the ball is fairly universal. Let he who is without regret throw the next cliché!

So this Monday's episode of Major Crimes , "Acting Out," begins with a recovering addict (boy has sobriety; boy loses sobriety; boy gets sobriety back again) confessing to murder during a meeting of his support group.

Or does he?

In short order, Lt. Provenza & Company find a former child star

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 Stays Atop US Box Of

On a very slow weekend...

Hunger-Games-Mockingjay-1-Still-Atop-US-Box-Office

Welcome to the Dead Zone. No, Christopher Walken isn’t around having psychic vision – it refers to this quiet period in the American box office release schedules between Thanksgiving and Christmas when the studios largely eschew releasing big films and the charts show little change. Which might explain why The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is still ruling the top of the charts with $21.6 million this weekend.

The third Hunger Games outing has spent three weeks at the top so far, earning $257.7 million as a US total and more than $300 million internationally. Those Penguins Of Madagascar held on for dear life in second place, taking in $11.1 million for a still-low $49.5 million total to date. One of the beneficiaries of this quiet period was Horrible Bosses 2, which clawed its way up from fifth to third and added $8.6 million. But with $36 million in the bank so far, it still hasn’t made its budget back domestically yet.

Disney’s Big Hero 6 was pushed one place down to fourth, as Baymax and co. earned $8.1 million. That still kept it ahead of Interstellar, which slipped to fifth with $8 million.

Dumb And Dumber To stayed at sixth, goofing off with $4.1 million, while The Theory Of Everything hovered at seventh, adding $2.6 million for a $13.6 million total in more limited release so far. Gone Girl was once more eighth, taking in $1.5 million, while Fox opted to open its new horror pic The Pyramid on a relatively limited number of screens (589, to be exact) with the movie scaring up $1.3 million. Birdman, meanwhile, slipped down one place to 10, with $1.1 million this weekend and $18.9 in total so far.

Why Christopher Nolan Movies Will Never Be Like Marvel Movies

From the most recent Interstellar to Inception, Memento, and even The Dark Knight series, Christopher Nolan has a knack for creating incredible, mind-bending movies that are difficult to compete with. Though he has touched the superhero world with his take on the caped crusader, Batman, Nolan's trilogy is nothing like any other superhero movies to date. Nolan movies have a very distinct style to them, they make the viewer think in ways many other films can not, especially Marvel movies. In a recent episode of The Colbert Report, the always hilarious Stephen Colbert sat down with Christopher Nolan to discuss ...

Roberto Orci Won't Direct Star Trek 3

Roberto Orci Won't Direct Star Trek 3

Could Edgar Wright replace him?

Robero-Orci-Off-Trek-3

Eyebrows cranked higher than Mr. Spock's when Roberto Orci – intimately linked with the franchise through co-writing and producing J.J. Abrams’ first two Star Trek films – announced he was directing the third outing for the Starship Enterprise, despite zero helming experience. It’s less of a surprise to report that he’s no longer in the big chair.

No reason was given for his departure, but he will be staying on the film as a producer, especially since he’s been overseeing the script he’s co-written with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Perhaps, as production crept towards him, he decided he simply wasn’t ready to go from no directing credits to a massive, technically complicated film in one step.

So who might take on the job now? Deadline has heard that Edgar Wright is among those on the shortlist to tackle the gig, and while he would be a fine – he and the current Trek films' Scotty have a bit of a history, after all, and he’s proved he can juggle effects and emotion – the Ant-Man experience may have made him wary. Can an Edgar Wright-style film fit in with the needs of an established blockbuster universe?

We’ll have to wait and see who eventually does take on the task, but with Paramount looking to have the film shooting next year ready for a 2016 release (to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise as a whole), they’ll need to be in place soon.

Why The Dark Knight's Batman Won't Be In Any Other Superhero Movies

Christian Bale's portrayal of Batman in The Dark Knight series will go down in history books as one of the best Batman performances to date. And while there's been speculation on the return of The Dark Knight's Batman, Bale has put the notion to rest, assuring that his portrayal doesn't fit in any other superhero movies. While Bale has been busy promoting his upcoming role in Exodus: Gods and Kings, he's been blasted with questions on his reaction to the new Batman introduced in upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. In a recent interview with IGN, Bale denied a ...

Why Stephen King Is Finally Letting His Novel It Become A Movie

The King of Horror has finally given his blessing for a movie adaptation of his terrifying novel, It. But one specifically epic novel, It, has not seen the screen time it deserves, and after reading a new script for a movie version, King has given the go ahead. The project's producer, Dan Lin (also producer of The Lego Movie) discussed the new project with Vulture and commented on the author's excitement.
